For example, I picked up Ilya Bryzgalov as a free agent for my created team, The Chicago Victory. We've heard a lot about goalies playing smarter in NHL 17, but quite honestly, I haven't seen it. Limited Options With Player and Team Creation The functionality of the mode saw improvements last year which allows you to play through games quicker, but we don't see any huge enhancements to BAP this year.

The NHL series is still offering a somewhat bland experience on this front. Other single-player career modes such as the upcoming offering from FIFA 17, NBA 2K and others have incorporated cinematics to tell your player's story.

The Be A Pro mode saw little to no attention this year. No Personality or Cinematic Elements in Be a Pro Ultimately, you gain the feel for how long it takes to execute a pass, but it can still be frustrating. It caused turnovers and delayed my rush on some occasions. There are times when passes just don't come off the player's stick as quickly as it should. It's a small thing, but notable.Īlmost every stick and button command in the game is intuitive, with one exception. The information given is the most in-depth and useful I've seen in any sports game. However, fans who are more casual followers can gain much-needed assistance from the coaching feedback between periods in NHL 17. The more familiar you are with a sport, the less likely you are to need in-game tips and strategies. The updates help to bring NHL 17's Be A GM mode slightly ahead of MLB The Show 16's, but just a step behind NBA 2K16 and NBA 2K17's MyGM and MyLeague. The franchise mode is fully fleshed out with options to relocate teams, make general manager decisions on personnel and revenue streams, and there's also the ability to edit players and to use created teams.

The Be A GM mode in NHL 15 lacked a ton of options and the post-launch update did little to ease the pain. The first version of NHL on this generation of gaming consoles had a shameful excuse for a franchise mode. On a whole, the Hockey Ultimate Team package is stellar and it'll keep you playing the mode, in some fashion, for a long time. It's just as good in NHL as it is in Madden. Thankfully, NHL 17 has added it to the feature set. The concept is now a must for me in any virtual card mode. The Draft Champions option was the best new addition to the sports video game genre in 2015. When you mix in the dekes, natural stick movements that can be used to fake out defenders and the variety of shots and passes, gamers have everything they need to be a threat–if you can master the commands. The slap-shot aiming is a great addition to the offensive toolbox. When you're controlling a player like Steven Stamkos, it feels like you can do anything on the ice, and that's the way it should be. Fast skaters feel different to control than lumbering defenseman. What happens when skaters are allowed to skate free? The animations are smoother than ever. More subtle checks and hold ups around the boards also look and feel great. Smoother Skating, Shooting and Checking AnimationsĬomplete demolitions aren't the only examples of hitting that are accurately represented in the game.
